Nightlife in Porto

The easiest place to start a Porto night and the area most visitors end up at some point. Rua Galeria de Paris and the streets branching off it in the Cedofeita parish pack an improbable number of bars into a walkable stretch. The crowd is mixed - students, tourists, locals who've been coming here for years. The format is simple: pick a bar with music you like, drift when you're ready, repeat. It peaks between midnight and 3am on weekends. It's not Porto's most authentic corner but it's lively in a way that doesn't feel manufactured.

The neighborhood that Porto locals tend to redirect you toward when they want you to see a different side of the city's night. Bonfim has been gradually filling with small bars, natural wine spots, and low-key restaurant-bars that stay open late. These are the kind of places with mismatched furniture and no sign on the door. They've been opening steadily over the last decade as rents pushed creatives east from the city center. The crowd here is younger and more local. The music tends toward indie and leftfield. The whole thing feels less organized than Galerias, which is exactly the point.

The riverside has a different character from the rest of Porto's night. It's more about sitting outside with a drink watching the Douro and the illuminated Dom Luís I bridge than it is about bar-hopping. The terrace bars along Cais da Ribeira fill up on warm evenings. The atmosphere is one of Porto's best, if more tourist-heavy than the other neighborhoods. Worth a couple of hours early in the evening, in summer, before moving up into the city. The views at night are the kind that make people extend their Porto trips by a day.
